Everyone loves a good football analogy, don't they? Don't they? Well, love them or hate them, the beautiful game will always require a referee to oversee proceedings. Most of the time they'll make the right decision, which most of the time will pass everyone by because they're "just doing their job". Some of the time they'll make the wrong decision (or in some cases what certain factions will believe is the wrong decision) and this will be analysed and criticised in great detail.
But ask me to pick my favourite referee, say who I would want to referee the FA Cup Final.....and honestly I don't really care. As long as they have a certain level of authority and they know the laws of the game then, aside from a few idiosyncrasies, they will largely do what I described above - get most decisions right and some decisions wrong. Of course there will always be supporters who are genuine students of the game, who will relish the debates over which calls were correct and which weren't. There will also be those that have eyes only for their team and won't hear a word said against them. Many will be relative neutrals, passively observing as the game progresses.
But me? Like I say I don't really care and have never shown an interest in who the referee is and this will be the same whether they wear black, green, red, blue, yellow or whatever. The only thing that might change that view would be if a Sunday League referee was suddenly one of the leading candidates, then there might be a reason to ensure someone else is chosen. Until that time comes I'll continue to just watch the game.
